And often the surgery is not even necessary, reports Richard A. Deyo, M.D., of the University of Washington School of Medicine. His extensive review of more than 80 studies over the past 26 years found that a whopping 95 percent of back patients revover quickly with the most conservative treatment: one to two days of bed rest followed by exercises, along with short-term painkillers, muscle relaxants, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. According to Dr. Deyo, only people with disabling sciatica that doesn't improve after several weeks of conservative care, or those suffering progressive motor deficits, such as weakness in the legs, need surgery.
